Queer Solidarity of Western North Carolina

Striving To Create a More Inclusive Community

Queer Solidarity is focused on building community & addressing local issues through the LGBTQIA+ lens in North Carolina’s Yancey & Mitchell counties. All queer folks & active allies welcome! We are nonpartisan, intergenerational, multicultural, and prioritize wellness.

LGBTQIA+ people have always lived in Appalachia and contributed to the success of our region. We are your friends, family members, and business owners that have helped grow and support this beautiful area. Queer folks are often at the forefront of activist movements and helping to create change for vulnerable populations whether it be LGBTQIA+ rights, worker’s rights, racial justice, women’s rights, or preventing voter suppression, etc.

QS welcomes and needs the effort of all who are respectful of differences and open to feedback! It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all members of our communities are supported and empowered to advocate for their needs and their right to live freely.

Our Vision

Queer Solidarity WNC is made for and by local residents. We believe that rural areas thrive when folks feel connected, valued, and supported by the communities in which they live. It takes the connection and action of both LGBTQIA+ people and active allies to ensure the most vulnerable members of our communities are supported.

QS looks through the LGBTQIA+ lens when exploring the impacts of local issues and responding to what is happening within our communities. We do this to ensure the concerns of queer folks are represented and our valuable input is a part of the larger conversation. We believe that engagement in local government is a key element in building community and strengthening our democracy at all levels.

Queer Solidarity believes that community building is the foundation of maintaining the wellness and safety of all residents. Regardless of political trends, who is elected into office, or what rights are being questioned, we can thrive when our communities are grounded by shared values of connection, tolerance, and supporting the rights of all to live freely.

QS believes that individual, family and community wellness are crucial elements of creating change. We strive to engage in ways that are healthy and sustainable for all involved. We understand that the rate of change can be slow and our efforts must be consistent over long periods of time. For these reasons, we encourage members to reflect on their passions, skillsets and energy limitations. Then, they can focus their time and efforts in areas that bring them the most joy while maintaining their health. We currently have six different areas of focus or ‘Circles.’

The Circles

In order to build connected, supportive communities, we must lean on one another. No one person can maintain their health, personal and professional relationships, and engage in all areas of local activism at the same time!

Queer Solidarity asks that each of us do what we can in the areas that make us feel most inspired and share what we learn with the group. In this way, we can create sustainable routines for engagement in local activism and amplify our individual impact through collective action and resource sharing.

When we all pitch in, we share responsibility for and pride in our community. Activism can be a sustainable, healthy addition to your life when people work together to spread the weight of it all. Instead of a small number of individuals sacrificing themselves for the greater good, let’s figure out how we all thrive together!
